It was worth the half-hour drive and the change of schools midyear for Kim Hedrick to transfer her two children to a charter school.

Worried about other children's discipline problems and the attention her kindergartner and fourth-grader received at Palm View Elementary, Hedrick wanted another option. She found -- and liked -- Manatee School of Arts and Sciences.

The downside: the building.

She cringed at the sight of the tiny elementary, packed into a former nursery school in northwest Bradenton.

"The mouth just kind of dropped," Hedrick said.

Most of the facility is visible when you walk in the door. No one parks in the parking …
