WASHINGTON, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Sleep apnea, a breathing disorder with serious consequences, affects approximately 18 million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. However, it is estimated that about 90 percent of all cases remain undiagnosed, mainly because the sufferers do not recognize their symptoms as a sign of a larger problem.

An apnea is an absence of breathing, and this is just what happens to sufferers while they sleep -- the breathing becomes obstructed for a short period. Sufferers are prone to a variety of symptoms including loud snoring, nocturnal gasping and choking, excessive daytime sleepiness and…
