Captain Wolfgang Schroder, who is in prison in Mobile, Alabama, after being found guilty of manslaughter after his ship knocked down a crane in the port killing an engineer working on the unit, had been commended for his involvement in the aftermath of the sinking of the Herald of Free Enterprise in Zeebrugge in 1987, it has been revealed, writes Michael Grey.
