Nov. 29--BARSTOW -- The Hesperia boys basketball team overcame a slow start to beat Barstow 68-59 in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Don Bilsbrough Gymnasium.
The Aztecs (0-1) held a 10-7 lead after the first quarter and stayed with the Scorpions (1-0) through the first half. However, Hesperia ran away with the game in the third quarter, opening the second half with a 17-5 run. After Barstow's Michael McCray hit a 3-pointer to open the half and put the Aztecs down by one, Hesperia hit three straight 3-pointers.
"I think both teams were a little rusty, with this being the first game of the season," Hesperia coach Sergio Lugo said. "After the first half, I really feel we started to play a lot better, and Barstow did too."
The Scorpions' Raymond Mitchell grabbed 13 rebounds to go with his 19 points; Stephen Evans had 13 points and five assists; and Jaron Strickland dished out six assists.
Barstow's Kevin Lawson scored a game-high 26 points. McCray finished with 15 points.
