The recently introduced Yaris is a direct descendant of the discontinued Echo, the previous smallest Toyota that lives on (mechanically, at least) in the Scion xA and xB. The Yaris introduction coincides with that of budget cars Honda Fit (CR, August '06, page 9) and Nissan Versa.
We're testing a Yaris sedan with an automatic transmission, optional power package, and antilock brake system (we had a hard time finding that safety feature in a Yaris). The price: $15,443. We'll test a hatchback Yaris as well.
First impressions. The Yaris's 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine provides adequate acceleration and emits an unobjectionable hum. The four-speed automatic is responsive and makes the best of the 109 hp. A fifth gear could have made the Yaris quieter on the highway. ...
