(From The Moscow Times)
Russian officials said Thursday that Moscow would recognize Kosovo independence only after Serbia did, adding that Kosovo should negotiate one-on-one with Belgrade.
"We once again decisively called on Pristina to contact Belgrade directly," Konstantin Kosachyov, head of the State Duma's Foreign Affairs Committee, said at news conference after a meeting with Kosovo leader Agim Ceku.
Ceku said he had come to Moscow for a two-day visit to persuade Russian officials that "the government of Kosovo Albanians [is a] reliable and legitimate partner in the international arena."
Ceku added, in televised remarks carried on Vesti-24, that Moscow should press Belgrade "to be more realistic in its dialogue with us."
The Kosovo leader also met Thursday with Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov. In a statement released after that meeting, the Foreign Ministry said it held the Albanian leadership of Kosovo responsible for the rights of ethnic minorities in the region.
Russia has deep ties with Serbs, whom it regards as Slavic brothers. The 1999 war between NATO and Serbia prompted widespread anti-U.S. outrage in Russia.
