ABOUT 1.25m British holidaymakers are expected to take a cruise this year, an increase of 17%, according to latest figures from the Passenger Shipping Association, writes Sandra Speares.
It says: 'The increased concentration of ships and capacity targeted at the United Kingdom market has ensured the market has gone from strength to strength.'
New ship launches during the year have included Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas , Holland America Line's Noordam , Fred Olsen's Boudicca and Island Cruises' Island Star . Eight new ships are to be launched next year, including Costa Serena for Costa Cruises, Cunard's Queen Victoria and Carnival's Carnival Freedom .
The PSA expects Ocean Village's second ship to have a 'significant impact' on the number of people taking cruises as 60% of its passengers are first timers.
Total British cruise passengers are expected to increase 8% next year to 1.35m.
