A silver lining
They say there is a silver lining behind every dark cloud. This could be true for the port of Dover after the chaos caused throughout Kent by the snarl-up on the M20 motorway as a result of yet another French blockade of Calais docks.
Kent police, for the 150th time, imposed Operation Stack on the M20 when ferries to Calais were unable to sail for about 24 hours.
More than 1,000 trucks were forced to queue on the approach roads to Dover.
Now officials at the port of Dover are hoping this chaos will help in persuading the planning authorities to look kindly on its proposed 1,500-truck holding area just off the motorway near the cliff tops between Dover and Folkestone.
The idea is that when there is trouble at Calais and there is sure to be freight lorries could remain in this holding area until the ferries are able to sail again.
