A WEAK dollar has given a welcome boost to one of the world's more difficult trades, writes Janet Porter.
Demand for secondhand American cars and other US vehicles is booming in West Africa.
Whereas depreciation of the US currency has not made much impact on north Atlantic trade flows there has been a noticeable effect on other routes, according to industry experts.
Grimaldi, which launched a twice-monthly direct service from the US east coast to West Africa last month, has seen such a good level of interest that a third vessel may soon be deployed.
The ships are full on their eastbound sailings, says Andrew Abbott, chief executive of Atlantic Container Line, part of the Grimaldi group. The company is deploying ro-ro ships able to carry up to 650 20 ft containers, 300 trucks, tractors or buses and 1,600 cars.
The service calls at Jacksonville, Baltimore, New York, Dakar, Tema, Lome, Cotonou and Lagos.
