SKULD P'I Club has admitted that it is disappointed over the rejection of a merger proposal by shipowner leaders of the Swedish Club as analysts speculated on a range of reasons, from the planned establishment of a huge governing shipowner council to management succession problems to location of services, writes James Brewer.
A statement from Douglas Jacobsohn, president and chief executive of Skuld, said his organisation was 'surprised and disappointed because we believe that it would have been a sound industrial solution in the best interest of the two associations' members, facing coming challenges of the industry'.
Mr Jacobsohn said Skuld chairman Erik Gloerson confirmed, after consulting Swedish Club chairman Christer Olsson, that the Gothenburg club's decision was 'not based on any outcome in the due diligence process or other findings in Skuld's operations'.
'As far as we understand their decision is influenced by feeling a lack of equality between the parties,' he added.
A statement from the Swedish Club said that exploratory discussions 'revealed many positive synergies between the clubs.
'The talks were pursued in an amicable atmosphere and the decision not to proceed was taken after much consideration. As a result the Swedish Club will now continue to develop as the preferred choice for discerning owners seeking P'I, hull and other related insurance services.'
