Heerema Marine Contractors has announced a staggering investment of $1bn for the construction of a new crane vessel, one of the largest investments ever in a single ship, writes Helen Hill.
The Netherlands private company is at present seeking a suitable yard but the mammoth vessel, unlike others in its fleet, will have both a crane for lifting capacity and pipe-laying equipment.
At approximately 220 m by 88 m, the vessel will be larger than the Thialf, which is at present the largest crane vessel in the world at 14,200 tonnes.
The Thialf can lift the equivalent of 1,750 London buses at one time.
Heerema spokesman Lars Walder said the Thialf had the lifting capacity while the Balder had pipe-laying equipment. The new crane vessel would combine both.
It will also be able to work in very deep water and in the Arctic.
