Rice visits Abbas in Jericho
JERICHO, West Bank, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met in Jericho Thursday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who said he faces a political "deadlock."
During their meeting, Rice praised Abbas for his role in establishing a cease-fire with the Israelis in Gaza last weekend, and also expressed concern for the deteriorating humanitarian conditions for Palestinians, CNN reported.
Abbas said he believes his efforts to form a unity government with Hamas and his Fatah party had reached a "deadlock," and said Palestinians were suffering as a result.
"They have been denied resources, but unfortunately we failed. We did not succeed," Abbas said.
