WASHINGTON -- Physicians shouldn't have to foot the bill for medical interpreters or be responsible for assessing their qualifications, Medicare's Practicing Physicians Advisory Council recommended at its recent meeting.
Current requirements to do so are problematic, especially when the cost of interpretation services is disproportionate to the cost of services provided, the council noted. The PPAC reports to the Department of Health and Human Services and meets quarterly to discuss proposed changes in regulations and carrier manual instructions related to physicians' services.
