The long Labor Day weekend is approaching and with it the buzz of excitement in Englewood where the annual Pioneer Days provides something to do for every one. It's also the weekend when local band, Smokin' Hotties celebrates its CD debut at Englewood's Junior's Lounge.
The Pioneer Days event has a 44-year history including a few interruptions by hurricane threats, but the weather looks cooperative this weekend with the exception of some steamy temperatures. But then, we're in Florida and come to think of it, we're mostly all pioneers.
Events all weekend include a parade at 9 a.m. Monday with about 40 units this year. The parade will travel from West Cowels Street, up New York Avenue, along West Dearborn Street and down Old Englewood Road to Harvard Street. Streets along the parade route will be closed at 8:30 a.m.
Bring a lawn chair and something cold to drink.
Then the Englewood Jaycees invite you to the Englewood Recreation Center, 101 Orange St. following the parade. Food, music and games will be offered throughout the day, and the parade winners will be announced from the stage as soon as the results are available.
Judges for this year are Cindy Meals, Tish Mercier, John Flower, Bob…
