Deciding on a new player to handle CDs has become complicated by other devices that also deliver music via digital signals. Here's an update on those major alternatives, along with some good choices in CD players, based on our recent tests. (A full report on music and video players is planned for later this year.)

DVD players can handle DVDs, the compact videodiscs for movies, as well as CDs. The premium you'll pay compared with a CD player is decreasing; prices now start at $170.
