I suspect that I am not alone in greeting the publication of yet another general text on Latin America with some trepidation. Neither am I alone in harbouring the distinct impression that the modern holy grail in the academic publishing world is a single text which purports to provide the 'basic facts' to meet the demands of modular-sized chunks of knowledge which are now the staple diet of undergraduate degrees. In the field of Latin American Studies, 'textbookitis' has been further stimulated by the attention focused on the region in preparation for the controversial commemoration in 1992 of the quincentenary of the first Columbus sailing.
