Signalling Spain's relationship with science as key to Spain's membership in modern Europe, Dale Pratt sets out in this study to track a dialogue in process from 1870 to 1970: the place of science in Spanish culture. The dialogue takes place with Spain's cultural modernity, and specifically, with its literature. The breadth of meaning of ciencia, stretching between 'knowledge' and 'science', contributes in no small way to the complications of the life between the two cultures in Spain. The detailed studies offered by Pratt go some distance towards providing a context and understanding of this life.
