BANKING

Cheryl J. Speno has joined First Federal Savings Bank as a wholesale sales manager in the mortgage banking group. In this capacity, she will be assisting customers and prospects for the Fall River-based Bank, in the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts regions. Formerly manager for Norwest Mortgage, she received her associates degree from Central City Business Management.

James M. Hagerty has joined Mellon New England as a relationship manager in the middle market banking department. He is responsible for business development for companies with annual revenues from $20 million to $500 million. A graduate of Providence College, Hagerty joins the Providence-based company as vice president. He is a Certified Public Accountant, formerly with BankBoston's cultural, education and healthcare division.

EDUCATION

Rhode Island General Treasurer Paul J. Tavares honored recipients of the 2000 General Treasurer's Award for Outstanding Performance in Business Studies at a State House ceremony in the House Chamber (May 15). High school principals and guidance counselors selected the annual award recipients based on two criteria. The student must have attained a B+ average or equivalent through grades 9, 10, 11 and the first semester of grade 12, and demonstrated leadership potential for future success in the business world.
