ERIN BURNETT, CNBC ANCHOR: Now let`s get straight to our "Holiday Central" spot. Inside the numbers of the first big shopping weekend with our senior economics reporter Steve Liesman.

STEVE LIESMAN, CNBC SENIOR ECONOMICS REPORTER: Good morning, Erin. Thanks very much. Holiday shopping got off to a strong start this Thanksgiving weekend. The combination of earlier openings and deeper discounts drove consumers to the stores. While there was plenty of spending, investors today are going to have to grapple with the question of whether there were also plenty of profits. Let`s take a look at some of the numbers here. The National Federation of Retailers, this is their number. They said shopping this weekend was average shopping of 19 percent over the entire weekend. ShopperTrak RCT looking at Black Friday only, says it was up 6 percent. Visa USA took a look at all its numbers and they said we are still on track for our 7.5 percent increase for the entire holiday season. That compares with an 8.3 percent increase the prior year.
