Off to the library to look for the Radio Times of 29 September 1946. I wanted to find out how the BBC inaugurated its Third Programme (it was reborn as Radio Three in 1967). 'The Third Programme, ' wrote the then director-general, Sir William Haley, KCMG, 'will seek every evening to do something that is culturally satisfying and significant.' How intriguing, then, to discover that the new station opened at six o'clock on that late September evening not with a musical flourish -- that would come later, specially composed by Benjamin Britten -- or with Shakespeare or Bertrand Russell, but with a comic entertainment devised by Stephen Potter.
