It probably all started with Karl Benz, the German engineer who is generally considered the father of the petrolpowered automobile. Thanks to him and his light horseless carriage, all of a sudden it was no longer enough to have the swankiest surrey, no matter how many ducks and geese it caused to scurry. If one didn't have an internal combustion engine (complete with flag-waving manservant) with which to demonstrate one's wealth and status, one had better just stay indoors.
More than 100 years later and little has changed. For those celebrities for whom a lack of imagination is no barrier to celebrating their self-worth, the first port of call has to be the Park Lane dealerships.
