Education-funding questions in Florida are seldom simple but, in the July 18 referendum, Sarasota County voters will face a clear-cut proposal.

The ballot question will ask whether voters favor an additional 1 mill tax, to be levied during the next two fiscal years, "for operating expenses to maintain Sarasota County's school system."

The debate over the tax proposal has been complicated by election-year politics, confusion over Florida's complex funding formulas and peripheral issues, such as the school district's application for "charter" status and the superintendent's personality.
