Girls on Top

Reese was back in the gay-helmed Legally Blonde 2, Peta Wilson did Dracula proud in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Debbie Harry played gay in Spun (all now on DVD), but the best female performance last summer came from the 12-year-old girl in Crazy Jones (harmonygold.com). Jones (which won the audience award at Cinequest) follows spunky, green-haired tween Syd (played expertly by Francesca Catalano), who espouses very sophisticated and open-minded views on the fluidity of love and changes the life of the titular character (an unsociable gravedigger with Tourette's). Sci-fi geeks should check out the interactive 3-D Scourge of Worlds (Rhino.com), where a lesbian-ish halting and a powerful female elf take center stage. Another treat is Imogen Kimmel's Secret Society (firstrunfeatures.com), a pleasing comedy about big women who learn to love their bodies...
