PARIS -- A third-trimester ultrasound finding of dilated fetal small bowel of 18 mm or less is associated with complete postnatal resolution and a favorable outcome, Dr. Aleksandr M. Fuks reported in a poster presentation at the 13th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

On the other hand, a dilated fetal small bowel greater than 25 mm appears to be associated with gastrointestinal abnormalities, said Dr. Fuks who is with New York Medical College, Valhalla.

Ten singleton pregnancies seen between September 2002 and May 2003 had third-trimester sonographic findings of dilated (more than 10 mm) fetal small bowel distal to the duodenum. In each patient, the largest transverse diameter of dilated fetal bowl loop was recorded, and postnatal abdominal ultrasound was performed ...
