PARIS -- Estimated fetal weight is directly related to the success of external cephalic version, Dr. Emmanuel Bujold reported at the 13th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The finding, from a prospective study of more than 1,300 women, suggests that a trial of external cephalic version (ECV) before 36 weeks' gestation may not be optimal, said Dr. Bujold, who is now at Wayne State University, Detroit.
Previous data from the same study population at the University of Montreal suggested that, after parity, the amount of amniotic fluid in the uterine cavity is the most important predictor of successful ECV ("High AFI Linked to Greater External Version," OB.GYN. NEWS, April 15, 2003, p. 13).
"Since the amniotic fluid volume seems to be at its highest level around 36 weeks, I would suggest that the best time for ECV is probably around 36-37 weeks," Dr. Bujold said in an interview.
In the current study, 1,316 women with otherwise normal breech pregnancies of 36 weeks' gestation underwent a maximum of ...
