MIAMI BEACH -- Raloxifene improves the lipid profiles as well in nonwhite women as in white women, according to data extracted from a posthoc analysis of the Multiple Outcomes of Raloxifene Evaluation.
Women with the highest baseline cardiovascular risk benefited the most from raloxifene. After 4 years of therapy, they experienced a 40% decrease in their baseline risk of heart attack or stroke, Dr. Susan Johnson commented at the annual meeting of the North American Menopause Society.
The MORE trial randomized 7,705 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis to placebo or raloxifene (Evista) in doses of 60 mg/day or 120 mg/day. The posthoc subgroup analysis included 219 nonwhite women, of whom 55% were Hispanic, 21% were Southeast Asian, 10% were black, 5% were West Asian, and 9% classified as other.
Lipid profile and cardiovascular risk improvements in this group mirrored those seen in white women, said Dr. Johnson of the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
