The recent article on fetal kick counts has me concerned ("Persuade Patients to Get Fetal Kick Counts," Sept. 1, 2003, p. 12).

Dr. William M. Gilbert said that he advises patients to call labor and delivery if they don't feel 10 kicks in 1 hour and tells them that studies indicate a 70% reduction on stillbirth in low-risk women who perform these kick counts and report the results to their physician.

Prior to the appearance of the article, I had attempted to find more information on the correct method of performing movement counts, as many obstetricians in my area have varying instructions for patients. According to the American College of Obstetricians and ...
