ST. LOUIS -- Colpocleisis for severe pelvic organ prolapse is a procedure that will be used more often in the coming years, Dr. Sheldon Weinstein predicted at the 13th International Pelvic Reconstructive and Vaginal Surgery Conference.
The population is aging; by 2050 there will be a million women over the age of 100 years. "We're going to be caring for people for a lot of years, and as gynecologists we will face more" pelvic prolapse, said Dr. Weinstein of Southwestern University, Dallas.
Colpocleisis will be a valid option for many of them, particularly those who are immobile and/or whose caretakers have difficulty caring for them because of the prolapse. Such patients may be able to tolerate a pessary, which would be an option, but would have problems bringing it in for appropriate cleaning, he explained at the meeting, which was sponsored by the Society of Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeons and Emory University.
Colpocleisis, an obliterative, defeminizing procedure, is only for older women who are definitely permanently sexually inactive. ...
