New company expands `functional' sector

For consumers seeking more passion, energy, and serenity in their lives, or increased memory, eating a SmartChocolate bar may be the most delicious way to accomplish it. SmartChocolate is the newest entrant in the nutraceuticals sector, and is the brainchild of third generation chocolatier Tom Morley, Jr. Most recently the CEO of his family's concern, Morley Candy Makers in suburban Detroit, Michigan, Morley is now making his mark in this newest food industry trend as president of The Functional Foods Co., St. Clair Shores, Michigan. With partner Jimmy Schmidt, a renown Detroit restaurateur, Morley says, "We wanted to combine our expertise to produce a great tasting product with botanicals and organic chocolate." The 28-gram bars contain a variety of herbs -- St. John's Wort, Kava Kava, Ginko Biloba, and are made with organic chocolate from Barry Callebaut at Annapolis Chocolate Company, a certified organic processor.
