I agree with Dr. Morton M. Silverman's guest editorial "Destigmatize Physician Depression" (Aug. 15, p. 5).
In addition to the state licensure barriers he mentions, there are issues with hospital privileges and obtaining disability insurance. Every application for licenses, hospital privileges, and disability insurance requires divulging a history of depression. Mental illness and competency questions are lumped with committing felonies and having one's hospital privileges or licensure curtailed.
With more physicians making the transition from salaried jobs to private practice, the inability to purchase disability insurance because of a history of depression would tend to ...
