Republican Education Commissioner Tom Gallagher is dropping out of the U.S. Senate race and running instead for state insurance commissioner, a job he held from 1989-1995.
By abandoning his Senate bid, Gallagher clears the way for U.S. Rep. Bill McCollum to be the Republican Party's prime candidate for the seat being vacated by Republican Connie Mack.
Gallagher's departure ends what recently became a nasty contest with McCollum, one that some Republicans feared would hurt the party's chance of retaining the seat.
