James Madison University in Virginia announced that it is cutting 10 of its 28 varsity sports at the end of the academic year, blaming the choice on Title IX. The liberal arts school will eliminate three women's and seven men's sports, effective July 1.
More than 140 student athletes will be affected by the cuts, as well as three full-time and eight part-time coaches. AD Jeff Bourne said that scholarship players on cut teams will continue to receive their scholarships until graduation: "We are taking great care to preserve the financial guarantee already made to our student athletes."
