To understand just how successful Ted Boyett Jr. has made the University of Rhode Island's Tootell Aquatic Center-- and why he was named this year's Best University Manager--just consider the numbers.
In 1995, the center taught just one or two lifeguard training classes and 30 hours per week of recreational swimming. Now it offers more than 700 learn-to-swim classes; 50 fitness classes; 50 first aid, CPR and other safety classes; eight lifeguard training classes; five to eight leadership and instructor classes; and 70 hours a week of open swim and community service events.
The center's financing saw a similar swing. Back in 1995, it generated a mere $40,000 and operated at a net loss. Today, it brings in more than $250,000 and has become a major revenue source for the school.
Any way you do the math, those are some impressive figures.
