When aquatics legend Adolph Kiefer thinks your pool is tops, there's doubtless a good reason. Consider Chicago's Portage Park Pool, this year's Best Community Center recipient. Besides a venerable history, the pool still has what it takes to meet the demands of a varied community.
This pool's hallowed history starts in 1920, when it was built as a sand-bottom pool Then, in 1959, the park district replaced the concrete vessel with an Olympic-size pool in preparation for hosting the Pan American Games. Gold medalist Mark Spitz set world records at the pool in 1972, when Portage Park hosted the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials. Finally, in 1998, the pools and plaza area were renovated and an interactive waterplay area was created for children.
Today, the pool continues its tradition of competitive swimming, hosting U.S. Masters and national, international and local competitions. It also offers adaptive aquatics programs, junior and senior lifeguard training and water aerobics, along with a variety of swimming classes.
