When Fort Collins, Colo., redesigned the town's 50 year-old municipal swimming pool, it built a whole new facility, featuring a pool with a lazy river and two interactive play parks. The redesign made a big splash, but it also cost a small fortune: $1.7 million.

When Tim Milian's 44-year old pools in the city of North Miami began showing their age, he redesigned the facilities, too, adding a new deck slide and interactive water attractions. But this acting superintendent got a lot of bang for just a little buck: His redesign cost just $300,000.
