Thank you for highlighting the ongoing problem related to beach drownings in the Florida Panhandle in the Newsbrief section of your September edition.
I would respectfully wish, however, to correct an important inaccuracy. You stated in part that, "USLA was brought in to [Pensacola] to advise; it recommended that the number of [lifeguards] be increased. The suggestions were implemented, but the drownings this summer indicate that more may need to be done."
I was a member of a team of four USLA volunteers who visited Pensacola in September 2002. We were responding not to official requests for assistance, but rather, to requests from concerned citizens. We met with a wide variety of people, including many conmunity leaders, and issued a 106-page report, including 35 specific recommendations. Some of those recommendations have been adopted and some have not.
Perhaps our most critical recommendation addressed the fact that all of the drowning deaths in the area appear to have occurred outside the limited areas where lifeguard protection traditionally has been provided.
