WITH ANOTHER BASEBALL SEASON UPON US, MY MIND WANDERS INTO THE past and lingers on players and managers who have made baseball a special lure for me for such a long time.
Memories of these men date back to the 1930s when, despite being a south side Chicagoan, I followed the Cubs feverishly because they were winning a pennant every three years and were always in contention. Some of my lasting memories of these people include:
* Watching future Hall of Fame second baseman Billy Herman make fantastic plays on grounders hit to his left at Wrigley Field.
* Listening on the radio in 1938 as Gabby Hartnett hit his "homer in the gloamin" that helped the Cubs beat out the Pirates for the pennant.
* Interviewing long-time A's manager Connie Mack in his Chicago hotel suite and being impressed with his courtesy and kindness to a young reporter.
* Listening to the laughter and chatter of little Nellie Fox before White Sox spring exhibitions in Tampa and later in Sarasota, Florida.
* Viewing the amazing fielding skill and throwing arm of Roberto Clemente in his young days, particularly the time when he fired a ball from mid-right field into the stands behind third base trying to cut down an advancing base runner.
