SAN FRANCISCO -- Half of 733 women who gave birth to multiples reported urinary incontinence in a survey conducted a mean of 8 years after their last delivery, Dr. Roger P. Goldberg said.
In the first study of rates of incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction in mothers of multiples, half of respondents reported at least one type of urinary incontinence. (See table.) Stress urinary incontinence was reported by 46%; urge urinary incontinence by 27%; and mixed stress and urge urinary incontinence by 23%, he said at the annual meeting of the American Urogynecologic Society.
The 77-item anonymous questionnaire identified other problems in this relatively young population, including fecal incontinence (10%); flatal incontinence (25%); fecal soiling (10%); vaginal bulging or pressure (20%); and pelvic pain (17%).
These prevalence rates are "impressively high" for such a young cohort, said Dr. Goldberg of the Evanston (Ill.) Continence Center.
The questionnaire now is being studied in a control group of mothers of singletons, and results are expected within the next year to provide comparison prevalence rates, he added in an interview.
Respondents to the current survey delivered a mean of three children. Nearly all of them (93%) had delivered twins, 5% had delivered triplets, and a small number gave birth to higher-order multiples. More than half of respondents (57%) had undergone a cesarean section for a multiple birth, and 42% had a history of at least one vaginal birth.
