SAN FRANCISCO -- A small study designed to test the hypothesis that abdominal hysterectomy increases the risk of chronic constipation found instead that it's associated with an increased risk of anal incontinence.
Vaginal hysterectomy, however, did not affect rates of anal incontinence or constipation, Dr. Daniel Altman said at the annual meeting of the American Urogynecologic Society.
In Dr. Altman's prospective study 45 patients underwent vaginal hysterectomy and 75 underwent abdominal hysterectomy all for benign indications; 119 of the 120 women completed questionnaires with an interviewer before surgery and at 6 and 12 months after hysterectomy.
