SAN ANTONIO -- Benign breast disease is an independent predictor of increased risk of developing invasive breast cancer, Dr. Jiping Wang said at a breast cancer symposium sponsored by the San Antonio Cancer Institute.
He presented a new analysis of data from the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project breast cancer prevention trial. An earlier analysis of 11,307 participants in that trial showed that 1,301 of them developed biopsy-confirmed benign breast disease, an event associated with a 1.78-fold increased risk of subsequent invasive breast cancer.
Left unclear in the original analysis of the prevention trial was whether the elevated breast cancer risk associated with benign breast disease could be explained by an increased prevalence of a positive family history, advanced age, or other conventional risk factors for the malignancy.
