A new study has confirmed for the first time the efficacy of using cesarean delivery to reduce the rate of neonatal herpes simplex virus infection.
The prospective study found that women experiencing asymptomatic shedding and those who acquire herpes simplex virus (HSV) late in pregnancy are at greater risk of neonatal transmission, reported Dr. Zane A. Brown and colleagues at the University of Washington, Seattle (JAMA 289[2]:203-09, 2003).
The findings are significant because there recently has been speculation that because of the low risk of neonatal transmission, cesareans might not necessarily be indicated when the mother has herpes, Dr. Anna Wald, one of the study's authors, said in an interview
