Paula Barker Duffy, currently publisher of the Free Press, has been named director of the University of Chicago Press, effective August 1. Duffy will remain at the Free Press through May, and Carolyn Reidy, head of the Simon & Schuster trade division, will work closely with the top Free Press executives until a new publisher is named.

At the University of Chicago Press, Duffy will succeed Morris Philipson, who has led the press for 33 years. At the close of fiscal 1999, the press had revenues of $42 million. …
