Daniel and Judith Alves will get their pool cage after all.
On a 3-2 vote, the Punta Gorda City Council on Wednesday granted the couple a variance allowing the cage. The pool at the couple's house on Columbian Drive is 15 feet from their seawall; city code requires at least a 20-foot setback for such cages. The law was enacted in 1984 to ensure that property owners had unobstructed views.
In August, the Alves family petitioned the city for a variance, saying they needed the cage for health and safety reasons. The Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association opposed the variance, saying it would open a floodgate of other owners asking for similar shorter setbacks.…
