Although it has a 500MHz Celeron(TM) processor, a flat display about as deep as a business card, built-in speakers, a CD-ROM or DVD drive and runs Windows,(R) the PPC-123T announced today by Advantech(R) Technologies will probably never see a desktop. It's designed for tougher applications in medical imaging, public information kiosks, industrial control systems, and, perhaps toughest of all, arcade games for teenage boys.
Just over 3 1/2 inches deep, the PPC-123T's processor, up to 256MB of SDRAM, floppy, CD or DVD drive, 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet and other essentials are all built into the display. As a result, the system will find its applications wherever significant processing power is required but space is limited. Its ability to swap its 12.1 inch LCD display for a resistive or capacitive touchscreen means there doesn't even have to be space for a keyboard. (Bigger-screen versions are offered where space is available, however.)
The PPC-123T provides one parallel port, four serial ports, two PCMCIA ports, two USB ports, an infrared port, plus mic in, line in, line out, and that game port. There's also an expansion slot for PCI/ISA, 512KB flash PROM, and a hard drive up to 10GB.
