NEW YORK -- A short fetal nasal bone--not just a lack of one--was linked to an increased risk for Down synckome in a study of 1,027 fetuses at 11-14 weeks' gestation, David A. Krantz reported.

In the current study, sonographers at three European medical centers placed calipers in the out-to-out position on the images of any visible fetal nasal bone to determine its size. The median length in fetuses without Down syndrome grew from 2.5 mm at about 11 weeks to 3 mm at about 13 weeks' gestation, Mr. Krantz said at the 12th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
