U.S. breast-feeding rates continue to increase, according to data from a large national survey conducted in 2001.

In-hospital breast-feeding grew about 2% per year--and more than 3% in some groups--compared with 1996 rates. The largest increases in initiation of breastfeeding were in women who were black, under 20 years of age, or without any college education.

Higher rates of breast-feeding also were seen in those who were unemployed or participants in the government's Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, said Alan S. Ryan, Ph.D., of the Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories, Columbus, Ohio, and his associates.
