NEW YORK -- Thirteen of 33 nonhirsute women with normal ovulation had at least one multifollicular ovary on ultrasound examination, Dr. Jennifer Phy said at the 12th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology
The prospective study showed bilateral multifollicular ovaries in 1 woman, one multifollicular ovary in 12 women, and normal ovaries in 20 women.
There were no significant differences between these groups in serum hormone levels.
"Multifollicular ovaries may be a common morphologic variant of normal ovarian steroidogenesis," said Dr. Phy of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
Multifollicular ovaries, which contain at least six small follicles within normal stroma, have been associated with ovulation disorders in previous studies.
