NEW YORK -- Adding transvaginal sonohysterography to transvaginal ultrasound improved diagnostic confidence in a prospective study of 72 women with suspected or known leiomyomas, Dr. Eduardo Becker Jr. reported at the 12th World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Two sonographers independently interpreted hard-copy images from the transvaginal ultrasounds. Next, they assessed as a team the transvaginal ultrasounds plus the sonohysterography images.
Looking for abnormal uteri, myomas, submucous myomas, myomas remote from the cavity, adenomyosis, or focal and diffuse endometrial lesions, they rated their interpretations on a scale of 1-5, depending on how certain they were of the diagnosis.
The added information from the sonohysterography improved their diagnostic confidence for most of these parameters, said Dr. Becker of Luterana University, Canoas, Brazil.
The addition of sonohysterography improved agreement between the two interpreters about the diagnosis and location of submucous myomas and focal endometrial lesions.
