ATLANTA -- Obstetricians need to do a better job educating their pregnant patients about food-borne illnesses, Stepy Thomas said in a poster presentation at an international conference on emerging infectious diseases sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In a survey of 87 physicians in four specialties, only 20% of surveyed obstetricians said they provided information about food-borne illnesses to their patients, said Ms. Thomas of the division of public health at the Georgia Department of Human Resources in Atlanta.

"Obstetricians should try to approach it with patients, even on a low level, such as just talking about washing your hands a lot and staying away from high-risk foods," Ms. Thomas said at the conference, also sponsored by the ...
