NEW ORLEANS -- A significant proportion of women report dry-eye symptoms during pregnancy especially when they have had at least one previous birth, Joel Schechter, Ph.D., reported.
He and his associates conducted a pilot study of 33 women, aged 25-40 years, who completed a questionnaire about dry-eye symptoms, including itchiness and inflammation. All of the women had been pregnant at least once, he said at the Third International Conference on Sex Hormones, Pregnancy and the Rheumatic Diseases.
Six women reported at least one symptom of dry eyes "often" or "constantly" in their third trimester of pregnancy Symptoms were four times more likely to be worse during pregnancy than before it.
